CMG Hosts the 2026 Spring Festival Gala Prelude in Africa Union HQ, Addis Ababa

In a vibrant display of cross-continental friendship, the African Union (AU) Headquarters became the stage for a global celebration on Friday. China Media Group (CMG) hosted its high-profile special event, “Prelude to the Spring Festival Gala: The World Watches the CMG Gala Together,” marking the onset of the 2026 Chinese New Year festivities in Ethiopia.

The event drew an audience of over 400 attendees, including high-ranking officials, diplomats, and cultural enthusiasts. The celebration opened with captivating screenings of the 2026 CMG Spring Festival Gala previews and “China Travel with Chinese Films” promotional videos, instantly transforming the AU’s modern halls into a festive cultural bridge.

A Global “Spiritual Reunion”

In a video message to the assembly, Shen Haixiong, President of China Media Group and Vice Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, underscored the magnitude of the festival. He noted that the Spring Festival is now celebrated by roughly one-fifth of the world’s population, with nearly 20 countries designating it as a public holiday.

Celebrating its 43rd year, the Gala has evolved into the world’s most-watched annual cultural event. Shen highlighted that the 2026 edition, themed “Galloping Steed, Onward Unstoppable,” would push technological boundaries by integrating 5G, 4K/8K, and AI innovations. The broadcast is set to reach a global audience in 85 languages, shared across thousands of overseas screens and localized “Prelude” events to spread the spirit of inclusivity.

Shared Values and African Inspiration

The African Union echoed the sentiment of shared destiny. In a written message, Dr. Mahamoud Ali Yousouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, characterized the Chinese New Year as a season of renewal and hope values deeply resonant within African cultures. Looking toward the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, Dr. Yousouf noted that platforms like the Gala are vital for deepening mutual understanding and friendship.

Mohamed El-Amine Souef, Chief of Staff to the AUC Chairperson, offered a profound reflection on China’s development model. He noted that the seamless coexistence of ancient traditions with modern scientific achievement serves as a lesson for Africa. Using a powerful metaphor, Mr. Souef compared culture to a tree’s roots: just as deep roots provide stability against the wind, a strong cultural foundation allows societies to remain resilient even amidst rapid technological modernization.

A Fusion of Art and Cinema

The celebration was brought to life by an Ethiopian folk art troupe, whose spectacular performances of Chinese songs and dances captured the vibrant joy of the New Year. The event also featured a screening of the global box-office sensation Ne Zha 2, showcasing the pinnacle of modern Chinese animation.Beyond the performances, guests explored curated exhibits by CMG that showcased Chinese New Year customs and the history of China-Africa cultural exchanges. A creative products booth allowed attendees to experience traditional charm firsthand, cementing the event as a landmark moment in the “Year of People-to-People Exchanges.”
