Ethiopia Makes Historic First AfCFTA Export

Ethiopia has officially sent its first exports under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), marking a key step in regional trade and economic integration.

Shipments from Bole International Airport included meat, vegetables, fruits, and khat to Somalia; beans and coffee to South Africa; and maize and beans to Kenya.

Dr. Kassahun Gofe, Ethiopia’s Minister of Trade and Regional Integration, said: “We see the AfCFTA as a starting point to achieve the vision of ‘The Africa We Want’ and will use it as a catalyst for comprehensive economic progress.”

Rui Pedro Afonso Livramento from the AfCFTA Secretariat added: “Ethiopia shows what political will and collaboration can achieve, reflecting Africa’s readiness to expand trade, build value chains, and create opportunities.”

This launch positions Ethiopia as a growing player in Africa’s single market, paving the way for inclusive economic growth.
