The Afar Regional Government has accused forces of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of crossing into Afar territory and attacking civilians, in what it describes as a “clear violation” of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Afar Regional Communication Bureau said the incursion was an “attempt to destabilize the region and disrupt peace efforts.”
“The Afar people and government remain committed to peace, but will take all necessary measures to defend their citizens and territorial integrity,” the statement added.
The Bureau called on the federal government and international partners to take note of what it called continued provocations by the TPLF.
So far, there has been no independent confirmation of the reported attack or official response from TPLF representatives.
The Pretoria Peace Agreement, signed in November 2022, was meant to end the two-year conflict between TPLF forces and the Ethiopian federal government, restoring stability in the northern part of the country.
