A Sea of White at Meskel Square: Hundreds of Thousands Gather for Breathtaking Christmas Eve Hymns

ADDIS ABABA — In what has become one of the most visually stunning displays of faith in the modern era, hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo followers descended upon the historic Meskel Square on the eve of Genna (Ethiopian Christmas).

As the sun set over the capital, the vast amphitheater of Meskel Square was transformed into a shimmering sea of white, as the faithful, adorned in traditional Netela, gathered for a night of spiritual devotion. The event, organized by Janderebaw Media, featured the soul-stirring performance of the Aelafat Zimare (Hymns of the Multitudes).

A Symphony of Faith

The atmosphere was nothing short of spectacular. Led by choirs and spiritual leaders, the massive crowd performed rhythmic hymns that echoed through the heart of the city. The synchronized chanting, accompanied by the soft glow of thousands of hand-held candles and the traditional sounds of the Kebero (drum), created a transcendent experience that many attendees described as “heavenly.”

“It is not just a ceremony; it is a manifestation of our identity and unity,” said one young participant. “To see Meskel Square filled not with protest or politics, but with pure praise for the birth of Christ, is truly spectacular.”

Janderebaw Media’s Vision

Organized by Janderebaw Media, the event aimed to promote peace, national reconciliation, and the preservation of Ethiopia’s ancient liturgical traditions. By bringing the “Aelafat Zimare” to the city’s largest public stage, the organizers have successfully created a new holiday tradition that bridges the gap between ancient heritage and modern urban life.

As the hymns concluded late into the night, the followers remained in high spirits, ready to return to their local churches for the midnight liturgy and the subsequent breaking of the 43-day Advent fast.
