Former Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Tewolde Gebremariam has been appointed Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, according to a statement issued by the airline.
Last month, media reports suggested that Tewolde would become the CEO of Pakistan International Airlines. However, he has instead been appointed to lead Air India.
Tewolde will succeed outgoing CEO Campbell Wilson.
According to Air India, its Board conducted a comprehensive global search and carefully evaluated candidates from around the world before selecting Tewolde. The board said he was chosen for his strategic vision, leadership capabilities, and extensive experience in the aviation industry.
Tewolde served as the Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines for more than a decade and is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished aviation leaders. During his tenure, he is credited with significantly increasing the airline’s revenue, expanding its international network, and nearly tripling the size of its aircraft fleet.
