Sudan’s army led government has reinstated its seat to the Capital after nearly three years of wartime operation in the eastern city of Port Sudan.
By installing functioning government in the historical seat of power, Sudan’s army led administration asserted its legitimacy, and reclaim control over central power. This shift also indicated that Sudanese Armed Forces(SAF) has gained the upper hand in the civil war that broke out in April 2023.
Returning to the capital is a symbolic victory to the government, greatly undermining the parallel government established by rival Rapid Support Forces in July 2025.
Now hopes are high among troubled residents that the government would reinstate public services including water and electricity.
Reuters quoted Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris as saying “Government of Hope” was officially returned to Khartoum, and would begin efforts to improve services for the city’s beleaguered residents.
The army recaptured the city last March 2025, in what could be described as a breakthrough.
The war forced nearby 5 million residents to fled says UN. Those who refused to leave their home endured unspeakable suffering by the hands of RSF.
Idris declared that 2026 would be “a Year of Peace” for Sudan where at least 150000 killed since the outbreak of the war.
UN classified Sudan as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
The war broke out after the two generals fell out for power. Foreign interventions including the alleged backing of United Arab Emirates (UAE) to RSF have complicated the conflict.
