Ethiopia and U.S. signs $1.6 Billion Health Sector Agreement

Ethiopia Signs an MOU with the Government of the US on Health Sector Grant Cooperation Amounting to 1.616 Billion Dollar.

Under the agreement, the United States Government, commits up to 1.016 billion USD grant financing and 150 million USD additional grant based on performance, to be channeled through the government system for supporting Ethiopia’s national health priorities over the coming years.

The Government of Ethiopia, in turn, allocated up to 450 million USD additionally, signaling its commitment for the implementation of and sustainability of the program.

The five-year grant agreement aimed at improving disease prevention, health system resilience and strengthening public health systems in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia’s health grant follows earlier agreements signed by Kenya, Rwanda, and Nigeria: under Kenya’s deal the U.S. agreed to provide about $1.6 billion while Kenya pledged roughly $850 million in domestic co‑financing, with Rwanda securing about $228 million in U.S. support and the government allocated $70 M in co-financing, and Nigeria’s pact includes approximately $2.1 billion in U.S. funding alongside an expected nearly $3billion in Nigerian co‑financing. These deals, like Ethiopia’s, reflect the USs new new strategy since Trump’s second term in office began, which prioritizes reduced NGO intermediation, and performance‑linked cooperation.
