The clashes in Gambella region of Ethiopia which have continued unabated for weeks now, have forced the regional government to impose limit on movement of people.
The clashes, which some say have ethnic dimensions resulting in causalities and loss of lives in different areas of the region.
In a statement, the global humanitarian organization, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) issued on Tuesday said that medical facilities were being overwhelmed by casualties who sought immediate care, and as a result regular health care services have become impaired.
MSF stated that because of an escalation of what it described as clash, in the morning hours of Dec 24, 2025, alone it received over 100 wounded people adding that the number could be increase.
According to the statement, noting the intensity of the problem, MSF activated “mass casualty response” since last week, has received 150 people so far.
MSF voiced its highest degree of concern over negative impact of the clashes on health care facilities in the region saying “outpatient services have been suspended for over a week, and referral pathways remain severely disrupted due to in security.
The clashes have also reportedly unsettled hundreds of thousands refugees who are being sheltered in the regon after fleeing civil war in their home country-South Sudan.
The regional government issued a statement regarding the crisis, declaring prohibition of all movement from 8:00 pm-6:00 am. and a ban on unauthorized use of arms.
According to Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, areas affacted by the deadly crisis include Itang special Woreda,Gambela City, Abol.
The Ethiopia Federal government has reportedly dispatch security forces to contain the situation. However, it has not yet clarified as how the clashes unfolded, and what led to mass casualties and loss of life.
