The U.S. administration announced on Tuesday that it has designated the Sudanese-based Muslim Brotherhood as a global terrorist organization for committing “mass executions of civilians.”
According to a statement by the U.S. State Department, the designation will take effect on March 16, 2026.
The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood “uses unrestrained violence against civilians to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan and advance its violent Islamist ideology,” the statement added, accusing the group of receiving support from Iran’s military, with which the U.S. is currently in conflict.
The statement said the U.S. will use everything at its disposal to “deprive the Iranian regime and Muslim Brotherhood chapters of the resources to engage in or support terrorism.” It further stated that the designation of the Al-Bara Malik Brigade, an Islamist paramilitary group affiliated with the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood is a punishment for its role in the brutal Sudan civil war.
The war, which broke out in April 2022 after a fallout between two key generals in Sudan’s military government, plunged the country into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Since then, tens of thousands are estimated to have been killed, while millions have been displaced from their homes.
The war continues today with no end in sight, further complicated by external actors supporting rival factions.
