Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin Hold Strategic Small-Group Talks in Beinjing 2026

In a high-stakes demonstration of shifting geopolitical alliances, Chinese President Xi Jinping held small-group strategic talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The summit underscores Beijing’s central role in global diplomacy, occurring less than a week after President Xi hosted U.S. President Donald Trump in the same venue.

The high-level meeting coincides with significant milestone anniversaries for the two nations, marking 30 years of the China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination and 25 years since the signing of the landmark Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation.

Addressing President Putin during the introductory phase of the talks, President Xi emphasized the resilience of the bilateral bond, attributing its strength to persistent, long-term political commitment.

“China-Russia relations have come this far step by step precisely because we have kept deepening political mutual trust and strategic coordination with unyielding tenacity, expanded cooperation with a drive to always scale new heights, and defended international justice and fairness and advanced the building of a community with a shared future for humanity with unflappable resolve,” President Xi stated.

“The international situation is fluid and turbulent, and that unilateralism and hegemonism are resurging, yet peace, development and cooperation remain the aspiration of the people and the prevailing trend of our times,” Xi noted.

Driving a Multi-Polar World Order

As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, both Beijing and Moscow have consistently advocated for a restructuring of global governance frameworks—a shift that heavily resonates with developing regions, including Africa, that seek greater representation in international financial and political institutions.

President Xi urged both nations to leverage their positions to reshape the international order, stating that China and Russia should take a “strategic and long-term perspective.”

He noted that both powers must:

“…drive the development and revitalization of their respective countries through comprehensive strategic coordination of even higher quality, and work to make the global governance system more just and reasonable.”
