Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will seek a second and final four-year term after overwhelmingly winning the presidential primary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, according to results announced on Sunday.
The party held its primary election on Saturday after a surprise challenge emerged from little-known contender Stanley Osifo.
Tinubu secured nearly 11 million votes, while Osifo received about 16,500 votes, official results showed.
Tinubu, who took office in 2023, has earned praise from foreign investors for introducing some of Nigeria’s most ambitious economic reforms in decades. His administration removed fuel and electricity subsidies, loosened foreign exchange controls, and introduced major tax reforms aimed at stabilizing Africa’s largest economy.
Tinubu’s re-election prospects were further strengthened earlier this month after opposition parties failed to form a united coalition behind a single presidential candidate.
Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election against two major opposition rivals, who later challenged the outcome in court, alleging electoral irregularities. The courts dismissed the petitions, while Tinubu maintained that the election was conducted fairly.
Tinubu’s handling of Islamist armed groups has also drawn criticism from the United States, although Nigeria and the U.S. later coordinated efforts to hunt down leaders of terrorist groups.
