Kenya’s Economy Grows 5.1% in Second Quarter of 2026, Driven by Service, Construction sectors

Kenya’s economy expanded by 5.1% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, up from 4.9% in the same period of 2025, according to the national statistics office.

The increase reflects continued growth across several key sectors of East Africa’s largest economy including service and construction sectors.

The latest figures come amid ongoing economic challenges, including high living costs, pressure on household purchasing power, fiscal constraints and concerns over public debt. These factors continue to shape the economic outlook, particularly for households and businesses facing elevated operating expenses and affordability pressures.

While the improvement from 4.9% to 5.1% points to a modest strengthening in economic growth, the pace of expansion alone does not fully capture its impact on living standards. Employment creation, wage growth, household incomes and the cost of essential goods and services remain important indicators of how economic gains are being felt across the population.

Looking ahead, Kenya’s growth trajectory will depend on sustained performance in key sectors, investment activity, consumer demand and the management of fiscal pressures.

Continued expansion in transport, hospitality, ICT and financial services could support economic activity, while construction and reliable electricity supply remain important to infrastructure development and business operations.
