IAEA Director Congratulates Ethiopia on the Official Launch of Its Nuclear Power Program

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi addressed the official launch of Ethiopia’s Nuclear Power Program, the first high-level event of the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission (ENEC).

Grossi congratulated the Government of Ethiopia on establishing an institution tasked with developing and regulating safe and secure nuclear energy in line with international standards. In his official broadcast statement, he highlighted the transformative potential of nuclear power in strengthening Ethiopia’s industrial capacity and developing a highly skilled workforce.

He reaffirmed the IAEA’s full commitment to supporting Ethiopia as it advances toward adopting nuclear energy as part of its power mix. Cooperative work, he noted, is already underway in areas such as human resource development, institutional strengthening, and preparing infrastructure for future milestones.

Grossi highlighted that the high-level event will feature technical workshops on ENEC’s role in implementing nuclear-sector requirements. He encouraged the government to leverage regional and international expertise, including opportunities related to initiatives offering small modular reactors and advisory capacity-building, throughout this early phase of its nuclear journey.

He also discussed ongoing cooperation between Ethiopia and the IAEA in expanding radiotherapy and cancer care through the Agency’s “Rays of Hope” initiative, with further collaboration expected.

Nuclear energy is anticipated to support clean power generation, healthcare, agriculture, industry, and scientific research, strengthening Ethiopia’s broader strategy to harness technology for sustainable development.
