The African Union (AU) has called for “maximum restraint” amid reports over the last days of renewed clash between the Ethiopia federal and Tigrian forces.
The AU was among the key stakeholders who were presiding over the Pretoria Cessassion of Hostilities Agreement(COHA) that brought an end the two-year long bloody war fought between Ethiopian government and Tigray Peoples Liberation Front(TPLF). Three years later, the war reportedly broke out again, with reports of clash on the ground.
In a major sign of war, the National Carrier, the Ethiopian airlines also cancelled flight to destinations in Tigray region, citing “unforseen circumstances.”
In a statement issued by AU Today, January, 30, 2026, the African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he has been concerned by the situation unfolding in parts of Tigray region.

The “hard-won gains achieved under the AU-led COHA” should be preserved the Chairperson said calling up on the government and TPLF to “exercise maximum restraint”, and set issue to rest with dialogue in full adherence to COHA.
The AU has expressed its commitment to support parties in their effort to fully implement the agreement the statement noted adding AU’s readyness in scaling up facilitation of dialogue, cooperation and confidence building between the Parties.”
Despite the headlines of clash reports getting older across many news outlets, the Ethiopian government has not issue a statement of confirmation or denial.
Almost a year later after the Pretoria agreement signed on Nov.2, 2022, federal government and TPLF began trading accusations over failure of proper implementation.
