Ethiopia has assumed the Chairship of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) for April 2026, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry said that Ethiopia will officially begin presiding over the Council on April 7, 2026. The country assumes this role for first time since rejoining it in April 2025.
According to the statement, Ethiopia will lead the Council in deliberating on continental peace and security matters, including both country-specific and thematic issues.
Ethiopia has been a member of the AUPSC since its establishment in 2004. Notably, the Council made history this year by welcoming Somalia, which had been absent for decades due to a devastating and protracted civil war.
