The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has strongly rejected accusations made by the Sudanese army that a drone launched from Ethiopia’s Bahir Dar city attacked Khartoum Airport.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the Ministry expressed deep anger as it put forward counter-accusations, saying Sudan is “serving as a hub for various anti-Ethiopian forces.”
The statement added that the Ethiopian government has opted for restraint and refrained from publicizing what it described as grave violations of Ethiopia’s territorial integrity, as well as the alleged use of TPLF mercenaries in the Sudan conflict, in order to avoid harming ties between the two countries.
According to the statement, Ethiopia is particularly angered by the Sudanese army’s alleged extensive use of TPLF mercenaries in its fight against the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and by facilitating their incursions along Ethiopia’s western border.
“The activities of TPLF mercenaries in Sudan are a matter of public record, and there is ample and credible evidence showing that Sudan is serving as a hub for various anti-Ethiopian forces,” the statement said. It further noted that “external patrons” are behind this and earliest accusations made by the Sudanese army against Ethiopia.
Ethiopia called for dialogue between the Sudanese army and the rival RSF, preceded by a sustained ceasefire, to bring about a lasting resolution to the Sudanese civil war.
While this not Sudan’s first accusations, it represents unprecedented esacalation as it recalls its Ambassador to Ethiopia.
