Libya rescues 404 migrants from 10 Europe-bound boats

Libya’s National Army eastern coast guard rescued at least 404 migrants from 10 Europe bound boats after they faced harsh weather conditions, according to Reuters.

The incident occurred in Tobruk, a city in eastern Libya bordering Egypt, the report added.

According to the city’s Red Crescent, the rescued migrants are of different nationalities. Pictures posted by the Red Crescent on Facebook showed volunteers providing first aid, food, and blankets to the migrants.

On Monday, 10 migrants were confirmed dead after their boat capsized off Tobruk, and 31 were still missing, Reuters reported, quoting three Libyan sources and the International Organization for Migration. Six bodies were recovered on Saturday after washing ashore.

Libya’s desert and sea remain major routes for migrants, particularly from Sub-Saharan Africa, who brave these dangerous journeys in the hope of reaching Europe.
