Somalia secured a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council(AUPSC) in an election held during the 48th AU Ordinary Session of Executive Council at Headquarters in Addis Ababa on February 11, 2026.
Other countries elected for AUPSC are Benin, Gabon,Lesotho, Morocco, South Africa,Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo,Sierra Leoone and Uganda.
Somalia will serve at AUPSC for two years extending from 2026-2028. This diplomatic achievement marks the growing of Somalia’s influence in Africa’s security architecture, a comeback from decades long devastating civil war.
In a Facebook post, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia described the election as a significant diplomatic achievement and a “reclaiming of its rightful place in continental and international diplomacy.”
“This collective endorsement underscores strong partnerships and a shared vision for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Africa. As a member of the PSC, Somalia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advancing regional peace, security, stability, and constructive dialogue across the continent”, the Foreign Ministry said thanking countries that voted for Somalia.
The Executive Council meeting will be concluded Today, leaving the space to 39 Ordinary Session of Head of State and Head of Government scheduled for 14-15 February 2026.
This year’s AU summit have its focus on responsible use of water resources, and environmentally friendly sanitation systems.
