The U.S. under President Donald Trump is reportedly ended the legal status that Ethiopian immigrants had temporarily enjoyed.
The decision was made “after reviewing the country conditions and consulting with appropriate U.S. government officials,” Reuters quoted Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem as saying.
She said that Ethiopian immigrants did not fulfill the criteria for such status anymore.
The U.S. used to grant and extend temporary legal status for Ethiopians, mainly in connection with Ethiopia’s internal conflicts.
The Ethiopian government has yet to reflect on this decision.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2022, Ethiopian immigrants living in the U.S. were estimated to be 356,000. This figure, however, includes individuals who were born in Ethiopia and those with Ethiopian lineage.
