In its 19th regular session due to be held on 22 January 2026, Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives (HoPR) will be expected to approve draft bills on agreements Ethiopia entered with China, Brazil and South Africa to extradite criminals.
According to HoPR, after reviewing reports and resolutions forwarded by the Standing Committee on Law and Justice, HoPR will be expected to approve these bills, leading agreements to come into force.
Once these bills are approved, Ethiopia will be legally bound to extradite convicts and wanted individuals to these countries.
Accordning to the signed agreements, Ethiopia and China will extradite convicts to each other’s country, while also cooperating on criminal matters. Ethiopia also agreed with Brazil to extradite convicts, and with South Africa to extradite fugitives.
Timeline of agreements
On May 4, 2024, Ethiopia and China agreed to cooperate on criminal matters, and extradition of convicts.
On July 31, 2023, Ethiopian Minister of Justice and South African Minister of International Relations formally signed on extradition deal.
Late December 2025, Ethipia signed a deal on repatriation of convicts with Brazil.
