The Ethiopian Ministry of Health officially declared today, January 26, 2026 that Ethiopia is now free from Marburg Virus strain that plagued southernmost part of the country.
This declaration came after 42 consecutive days without new confirmed case. According to the tally by the Ministry, the Virus have so far resulted in nine deaths out of 14 laboratory-confirmed cases.
EBC quoted Dr. Mekdes Daba, Minister of Heath, as saying ” now, after massive efforts, we confirm that Ethiopia is free from Marburg Virus.”
The virus was first detected in Ethiopia’s Jinka town on November 14, 2025. The country has managed to contain the spread of the Virus into far other locations.
